Call for Submissions

The Journal of Art & Theatre is now accepting submissions! We are looking for contributions in the following categories: Visual Artwork and Graphic Design projects, Theatre and Book Reviews, Short plays, Poetry, Original Research Articles and Short Essays on Art/Theatre.

Deadline for submission: August 23, 2023

Visual Artwork Submissions

  • Artwork submissions are flexible - please submit a PDF that includes high quality images, titles, dates and dimensions of works, and an artist bio and statement. Please submit no more than 5 individual works for consideration.

  • Photo essays and images of recent exhibitions and plays are also welcome - please submit all images and captions in a single PDF and make sure you have the permission to use images.

Written Submissions

  • Short essays and research essays can be those written for courses, such as Art History classes, and may present original research. Written submissions should be in .doc format. Short essays can be 500 words and up - research essays should be 3,000 words + and no longer than 8,000 words and include Chicago style footnotes and a bibliography.

  • For theatre and book reviews, aim for insightful, critical reviews of recent works, rather than summaries. For theatre and book reviews, aim for 500-1,000 words.

  • Poetry submissions are flexible.

The Journal of Art and Theatre, run by faculty in the Department of Art and Theatre at JSU, serves to be an outlet for university students and scholars to publish their work. The journal publishes work related to visual culture, seeking to bridge disciplinary divides. Contributors may submit their original writing and artwork to the journal. More formal research, reviews, and artwork are subject to internal review before being published in the journal. Shorter, topical pieces and reviews are also edited and published on a rolling basis.
