African Artifacts at JSU

Since 2001, James and Beatrice Anderson have donated over 200 pieces of African art to various locations at Jackson State University. In 2018 they extended this tradition by gifting the department of Art and Theatre an additional 20 works. Below are select images from the 2018 addition to the James Anderson Collection in Johnson Hall. In 2022 and 2023 these objects will become part of larger scale digitization and research initiative that seeks to document all works in the collection and place them within their cultural and historic contexts.

Digitization of the collection will explore how new technologies can be used to better afford access to the collection and preserve the physical objects. Students have begun testing open access 3D Modelling software to capture works - see two drafted 3D models below:
