The Ceramics Studio
The ceramics studio at Jackson State University is always bustling with activity. Featuring state of the art kilns and an abundance of glazes and clay, the studio offers students an opportunity to experiment with a wide range of techniques. Hyun Chong Kim, professor of ceramics, first joined the Department of Art in 1997 after receiving her Master of Fine Arts from Indiana State University. Kim has an international reputation, having exhibited widely across the United States and in South Korea. She has received numerous awards for her work, but also several honors in recognition of her teaching and her dedication to supporting the American-Korean community. In addition to providing students with a foundation in traditional ceramics techniques and advising on how to produce functional items, she also encourages sculptural free handling of clay. More than anything, in the ceramics studio at Jackson State, art students are encouraged to craft individual artistic expressions.
